Meredith Monk – a composer, performer, and interdisciplinary artist – is one of the greatest artistic pioneers of our time, yet her profound influence on culture remains underappreciated. The film is a mosaic reflecting the structure of Monk’s own works and illuminating her remarkably original vocabulary of sounds and images. Philip Glass once said that “among all of us, she was – and still is – the uniquely gifted one.” What will happen to her art when she is gone? In the final part of the film, Monk confronts mortality. For 60 years she directed and performed in all of her music-theatre works. Now she must learn to observe.
