In 1987, Marlee Matlin became the first Deaf actor to win an Academy Award® for her role in “Children of a Lesser God” and, at the age of 21, entered the public eye. She made history in cinema, as for many Americans she was the first Deaf person they had seen on screen, and overnight became the symbolic, unofficial representative of the Deaf community in the United States. Telling her story in American Sign Language (ASL), Matlin confronts with remarkable honesty the cost of being a pioneer – the pressures of expectation, stereotypes, and the loneliness that comes with breaking barriers and charting new paths.
